Son-Father Talk

Son-Father Talk
By John R. Greenwood

My son and grandson
Grassy conversation with dad is time well spent, fleeting time, time you pack away for decades then pull out to quench your thirst. Son and father discuss the proper way to peel the bark from a maple stick. These moments Hallmark in feel, heartfelt in sincerity define fatherhood and life itself. They calm and sooth the harshness of the world. Snippets of summer so brief you can’t divide between real and imagined. What ingrains a photograph so deeply it never leaves? How does the texture of a cool lawn surround us in a blanket of memory? Why is this scene so scarce today? Let’s adjust our priorities to days where simple pleasures smother sensationalism. Fathers and sons, cool grass and a loose-bark stick make for magical conversation and summers that last a lifetime.

  6. So very true. Children and parents need to spend a bit more time in the grass rather than with video games or in front of television. So nice to see you here!

  8. I got a sense from your prose poem that the same picture could be taken throughout the generations of your family. Nice! And good point, though I hope we'll/they'll talk over something greener than cultivated lawns in the future!

  11. Wonderful! Well expressed. Parents do receive the greatest blessing of meaningful "eyesight" into the window of love.

  12. I had to comment on the beautiful, green imagery of your blog. Very natural and of course, a nice discussion of a father-son bond. :)
